Green light for DEMAT's first secondary school

June 13, 2025

Alconbury Weald Secondary is coming.........

Alconbury Weald’s secondary school has been given the green light, with planning approval received for the updated plans, which were submitted earlier this year.

The new secondary school - Alconbury Weald Church Academy, will initially deliver four forms of entry (600 pupils) and include a performing arts facility as well as a sports hall with outdoor courts and playing fields. The building has been designed to enable the secondary school to expand to eight forms of entry (1,200 pupils) in response to future demand.

The school, which has been designed in line with the DEMAT’s aspirations around sustainability, energy efficiency and best practice design, will support the ambitious curriculum for its future pupils.

“We’re delighted the school has reached this significant milestone and are looking forward to seeing work start on site. Since the updated plans were submitted, we’ve had lots of positive feedback and interest from parents whose children will be in Year 4 in 2027. We have a busy but exciting couple of years to get ready for the new secondary school to open.”

Adrian Ball - Chief Executive of DEMAT

“Bringing forward the right facilities at the right time to meet the needs of current and future residents is an important part of Alconbury Weald’s development. Approval of the updated plans for the secondary school is a key milestone for the Education Campus. We will continue to work with DEMAT to deliver an inspiring and sustainable place for learning and the community at the heart of Alconbury Weald.”

Rebecca Britton - Regional Director of Alconbury Weald master developer Urban&Civic

The school has also been designed to facilitate out-of-hours access to enable the community to use the main hall, performing arts spaces and sports facilities.

Work is due to start on site later this month and the secondary school is currently scheduled to open in September 2027.
